17th Century Cross Passage Screen

This screen is part of a Grade 2 star house in South Devon. The new owners are undertaking a careful programme of work to save this unique house.

Previous alterations caused damage to the screen as a section to the left was removed to allow another modern door to be added. The owners asked me to reinstate the screen to its original format.

The whole of the screen was found to be decayed at its base due to contact with a damp floor. After consultation with Historic England, the screen was removed and repaired on site with a new oak sole plate and a new section of panelling added . In addition, the damaged  door head was repaired and carved with floral spandrels.

The doors were an unusual design - a ledged 3 plank construction with applied lozenge design. Elements that were missing were remade and fixed in place.

The second screen has had new oak panels made and fitted. As can be seen from the photographs the screen has suffered  considerable deformation over the years from the loading from the first floor wall above. The new sections had to be made with an induced bow to follow the contours of the adjacent existing section.
